Rigoni and Bonvecchio win sixth edition despite course sabotage

Carlo Rigoni takes his second Ciaminada title. Don Franco Torresani, who started after celebrating morning mass, finishes second. Unknown persons had moved course markers at two points.

The sixth Ciaminada Nonesa was held on Sunday, October 16, 2016 in Sarnonico, on a 21 km loop through Fondo, Malosco, Ronzone, Cavareno, Romeno and Sarnonico. Around 150 runners started in autumn sunshine with near-freezing temperatures at dawn. At 9:58, the last athlete to arrive on the start line was Don Franco Torresani - who had just finished celebrating the 9 o’clock mass at his parish church.

Men’s race

Carlo Rigoni (5 Stelle Seregnano) won in 1h18’32”, claiming his second Ciaminada title after his 2013 victory. Don Franco Torresani finished second in 1h20’01”, Marco Pozza third in 1h22’10”.

Women’s race

Elektra Bonvecchio (Atletica Trento) won in 1h30’34”, placing 21st overall. Ingrid Landthaler was second in 1h35’28”, Tiziana Rossi third in 1h37’32”.

Sabotage on the course

During the race, organizers discovered that unknown persons had deliberately moved course markers at two points on the route. The leading runners noticed the tampering and replaced the markers before the rest of the field arrived, preventing further disruption.

A priest on the podium

Among the stories of this edition: second place overall went to Don Franco Torresani, a local priest who had celebrated morning mass before pinning on his race number. His time of 1h20’01” is already one of the most striking individual performances this race has ever seen.
